These images can be misleading, and don’t accurately reflect what AI technology really is, or how it affects our society and impacts our daily lives.
The Bigger Picture seeks to reshape how AI is perceived and understood through thoughtful, innovative visual storytelling.

An Open Call for Images will be published on 27 September and will remain open until 20 October.
The images of AI that come out of the Open Call will be on display in Cork and Dublin in November.

What happens to your body when you trick your mind into thinking you’re moving while sitting still and wearing a VR visor? From virtual to reality… and back! invites you to immerse yourself in a virtual world and experience it for yourself!
Experience what it feels like to embody a virtual avatar by wearing an IVR visor. This avatar may have different somatic features (skin color, clothes, body shape) or it can perform different actions (moving while the person is sitting) and this illusion can trigger subjective (having the feeling of moving) or physiological (changes in heart rate) effects.
Many of the platforms and programmes we use on a daily basis enable our digitally improved lifestyles (virtual assistants, search engines, translation tools, spell-checkers, language learning tools, etc) and are supported by language technology. However, our phones and computers are often ill equipped to deal with the Irish since there isn’t enough Irish language technology available. Consequently, Irish speakers frequently have to switch to English. The probability of digital extinction, or the eventual drop in language use due to a lack of technical support, is greatly influenced by this language switch. If Gaeilgeoirí must exist in this separate and detached way, then our efforts to promote Irish use by increasing the number of speakers alone will be ineffective.
Therefore, eSTÓR aims to source and curate high-quality Irish language data, in order to help bridge this digital gap by enabling research and development of Irish language technology.

ENTRUST is an EU project investigating how agricultural data can be shared and used in a fair way that benefits farmers. They’re exploring how technology, data literacy, and policies shape how agricultural data is used and shared, and what is needed to make this process better. ENTRUST believes that data can help to secure the future of farming, but what might that future look like? ISL STEM Glossary will present a series of videos exploring different scientific topics, presented in Irish Sign Language (with English captions).
Participants will be asked “How did Google Translate/Bing Translator/ChatGPT/etc translate this?”. The goal with this is to show people that, while we do have technology that can translate the Irish language, that doesn’t automatically mean they are perfect. The point can be made about the importance of researchers doing work to constantly improve this technology and that, even with Irish being a minority language, its speakers still deserve fully functional language technology and that is an important part of avoiding digital extinction.

In this demo, we challenge ChatGPT with real-world queries—like job recommendations based on gender—and then watch as it scores its own responses for fairness and bias. Through these use cases, you’ll see how AI can both reflect and rectify ethical concerns. Let’s see how well ChatGPT holds up when it’s put to the ethical test!
This exhibition is part of a media literacy project called Algowatch, funded by Creative Europe. The team in Ireland is led by Prof. Aphra Kerr (ADAPT/UCD). Algowatch aims to create awareness in young people regarding AI and algorithms. The Irish team has developed a video game for Algowatch that will be exhibited at the European Researcher’s night along with some cool ice breakers that our Croatian colleagues have come up with.
In collaboration with the ADAPT All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO), we have developed a Transition Year (TY) module on Linguistics. The module consists of 10 topics covering linguistics topics such as sounds, writing systems, language acquisition and machine translation. This TY Linguistics Module offers a set of teacher resources for use in the classroom. Teachers can complete all the topics or focus on those more relevant to their context. Certificates are also available on completion.

Transition Year Linguistics Module
ADAPT’s new ‘Technology in My Life’ programme, developed in collaboration with Mary Immaculate College, engages primary school students (aged 10-13 years) in teacher-led workshops on the ethical use of technology.
These modular teacher-led workshops will explore how to use technology in an ethically correct manner and in accordance with the moral and ethical standards of the school, the children’s home, and society in general.
The lessons here provide teachers with resources (i.e., presentations and teacher guides) for each of the seven workshops that make up the Technology in My Life series.
The ADAPT Centre offers a free modular workshop programme to help Transition Year (TY) students navigate the Age of AI successfully and safely.
AI in My Life has been developed by ADAPT’s researchers and education and public engagement experts, in collaboration with DCU Access, the Future of Privacy Forum, the Lero research centre, and the INTEGRITY Horizon 2020 research project. The programme is funded by SFI Discover and supported by Amazon Web Services. We have welcomed new partners for the 2023/2024 school year including DCU’s Anti-Bullying Centre, Maynooth University Access Services, Midlands Science and Mary Immaculate College.

The All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) is a contest in which secondary school students develop their own strategies for solving problems in fascinating languages from around the globe. Students must use their ingenuity to solve Puzzles such as deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics, decoding numerical spy codes, and interpreting ancient Mayan poetry. No prior knowledge of linguistics or a second language is required, as even the hardest problems require only logical ability, patient work, and a willingness to think around corners. AILO introduces students to linguistics (i.e. the study of human language) and to the application of logic to problems of language understanding and translation. The goal is to develop students’ problem-solving skills and to inspire them to consider the fascinating range of Careers at the intersection of computing, linguistics and language.
