#Explore AI
#ExploreAI is a family-friendly exhibition that will be open to the public on Friday, 27 September between 4 – 8pm in the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Trinity College Dublin for START: European Researchers’ Night 2024.
#ExploreAI is an interactive showcase of cutting edge research on artificial intelligence (AI) brought to you by the ADAPT Research Centre. For one day only, we’ll be exploring the impact of AI on creativity, health and entertainment.
Come along and #ExploreAI technology for yourself!
Programme of Events
VIGILANT
In the fast changing world of social media, should people be held accountable for what they post and share online? The VIGILANT project team will be exploring how people view the prevalence of disinformation in Ireland, both online and offline, how confident they feel in identifying what is disinformation and should Police be able to monitor and remove disinformation to prevent criminal activities? What is the line between freedom to post online and being held accountable for what you share?
Art or AI?
AI-generated art tools like DALL-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are changing how we view art and creativity. But as humans, how good are we at distinguishing a classic from an artwork generated by a machine?
The ‘Art or AI?’ Museum of Very Modern Art will have you scratching your head to figure out your Dalís from your DALL-Es. Browse the gallery. Ask yourself is this machine art or a Monet masterpiece. Note your answers and check your scores.
AI Dilemma Café
At the AI Dilemma Café we will be exchanging coffee for chats about people’s interactions with AI. Our AI dilemmas will encourage you to think about the technology you interact with on a day-to-day basis and how it shapes our lives and our interactions with others.
There will also be pop-up talks on ADAPT’s Artificial Intelligence research throughout the evening. Full programme coming soon!
From virtual to reality and back…
What happens to your body when you trick your mind into thinking you’re moving while sitting still and wearing a VR visor? From virtual to reality… and back! invites you to immerse yourself in a virtual world and experience it for yourself!
Experience what it feels like to embody a virtual avatar by wearing an IVR visor. This avatar may have different somatic features (skin color, clothes, body shape) or it can perform different actions (moving while the person is sitting) and this illusion can trigger subjective (having the feeling of moving) or physiological (changes in heart rate) effects.
Unlocking Irish Language Technology
Many of the platforms and programmes we use on a daily basis enable our digitally improved lifestyles (virtual assistants, search engines, translation tools, spell-checkers, language learning tools, etc) and are supported by language technology. However, our phones and computers are often ill equipped to deal with the Irish since there isn’t enough Irish language technology available. Consequently, Irish speakers frequently have to switch to English. The probability of digital extinction, or the eventual drop in language use due to a lack of technical support, is greatly influenced by this language switch. If Gaeilgeoirí must exist in this separate and detached way, then our efforts to promote Irish use by increasing the number of speakers alone will be ineffective.
Therefore, eSTÓR aims to source and curate high-quality Irish language data, in order to help bridge this digital gap by enabling research and development of Irish language technology.
Understanding AI
Join us at European Researchers’ Night for a fun-filled evening of discovery! Kids, parents, and everyone curious are invited to explore the amazing world of artificial intelligence through interactive puzzles and activities. Learn cool facts, and meet real scientists who will guide you along the way. It’s an exciting night where learning becomes an adventure for the whole family!
Neureka: Taking research out of the lab and into your smartphone
We think everyone should be able to participate in science from the comfort of your own home. That’s why we developed Neureka, a smartphone app that takes research out of the lab and into your smartphone. We use innovative methods such real-time mood tracking and gamified tasks to advance our mission of better understanding brain health. To help us with this mission, join us at European Researchers Night this September where we will bring the
Neureka app to life through real-life mock-ups of the tasks, describe our current research and what we plan to do next.
ENTrust DN Project
Have you ever heard of Agriculture 4.0? Ever considered the data behind your dinner? Explore the seasons of agricultural data and the future of farming with the ENTRUST Doctoral Candidates! ENTRUST is an EU project investigating how agricultural data can be shared and used in a fair way that benefits farmers. They’re exploring how technology, data literacy, and policies shape how agricultural data is used and shared, and what is needed to make this process better. ENTRUST believes that data can help to secure the future of farming, but what might that future look like? They want to hear what you think the future of farming should be, so put on your thinking hat, bring your creativity, and let’s brainstorm the farms of the future!
ISL STEM Glossary: Signs in Context
ISL STEM Glossary will present a series of videos exploring different scientific topics, presented in Irish Sign Language (with English captions).
Gaeilge Briste Uaidh Samhlacha Chliste
Participants will be asked “How did Google Translate/Bing Translator/ChatGPT/etc translate this?”. The goal with this is to show people that, while we do have technology that can translate the Irish language, that doesn’t automatically mean they are perfect. The point can be made about the importance of researchers doing work to constantly improve this technology and that, even with Irish being a minority language, its speakers still deserve fully functional language technology and that is an important part of avoiding digital extinction.
Come meet Teresa at Researchers’ Night and put your linguistic skills to the test!
ChatGPT scores itself for various Trustworthy AI metrics
Dive into a practical exploration of the EU’s seven ethical AI principles with ChatGPT 4.0 as your guide! In this demo, we challenge ChatGPT with real-world queries—like job recommendations based on gender—and then watch as it scores its own responses for fairness and bias. Through these use cases, you’ll see how AI can both reflect and rectify ethical concerns. Let’s see how well ChatGPT holds up when it’s put to the ethical test!
Algowatch
This exhibition is part of a media literacy project called Algowatch, funded by Creative Europe. The team in Ireland is led by Prof. Aphra Kerr (ADAPT/UCD). Algowatch aims to create awareness in young people regarding AI and algorithms. The Irish team has developed a video game for Algowatch that will be exhibited at the European Researcher’s night along with some cool ice breakers that our Croatian colleagues have come up with.
